Pole Counting

From Final Fantasy VIII Speedrunning

Getting into Caraway's Mansion requires the player to provide the guard at the entrance with a numerical code, which is normally found at the Tomb of the Unknown King. However, the code is determined by the same RNG that controls the sequence of poles that pass by the window during the Irvine-Selphie dialogue in the hallway of the train to Deling City from Galbadia Garden.

There are a few tools in existence to help with the manipulation, and all accomplish the task equally accurately, as found on the infoboxes on this page.

The Manipulation[edit | edit source]

The general process for the manipulation is the same, regardless of the tool used.

  1. Board the train to Deling City after completing the Galbadia Garden story points.
  2. Follow Irvine into the hallway with Selphie.
  3. Mash through the dialogue while counting the poles.
  4. Expect 4-6 groupings of poles.
  5. A small break between poles indicates that group has finished.
  6. An extra long pause is a group of 0.
  7. Once the dialogue is finished, hold down to leave the hallway ASAP.
  8. Note the groups and sequences in the tool.
  9. If the last group is unfinished when Squall leaves, denote that the final group was incomplete (usually denoted by a "?").
  10. The tool will output the code to give the guard at the mansion.
  11. Important note: The guard takes the numbers in reverse order. Meaning if the code is 128, the player would provide the guard with 8, then 2, then 1.
